What is the test for self-sufficiency in a married couple?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Hausmann v. Klukas, 2011 BCSC 1753 (CanLII):

At least in longer marriages, need is measured against the marital standard of living, and the objective of self-sufficiency (a relative concept) must be viewed in that context. Moreover, need is related to both the marital standard of living and the other spouse’s post-separation standard of living: Chutter v. Chutter, 2008 BCCA 507, at paras. 58, 61 and 88.
