Does a member of the teaching staff have a duty to tour the school premises after dismissal of classes?

Saskatchewan, Canada

The following excerpt is from Bourgeault v. Board of Education, St. Paul's Roman Catholic School District #20 et al., 1977 CanLII 1517 (SK QB):

I have considered whether a duty rested with the defendant to have a member of the teaching staff responsible for touring the school premises after dismissal of classes, to be sure that all students had left the building before he or she leaves as the last person, other than the caretaker, to depart the premises. If such a policy had been in force and had been followed on this occasion, this accident would almost certainly never have occurred. While the age and grade of children might prompt different responses as to whether such a duty can be said to exist, I do not believe it can be said any such duty was owed to a student of 14 years of age in her seventh grade, and who had received, when possessed with the ability to comprehend, instructions to depart for home. To require such a procedure would be to endorse the antithesis of the proposition expressed by Schultz, J.A., in Schade v. Winnipeg School District, supra, which I have quoted, and which I unhesitatingly adopt.
