What is the meaning of "fairness" in the context of division of matrimonial assets?

Nova Scotia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Sagar v. Bradley, 1984 CanLII 2892 (NS SC):

Again, in Archibald v. Archibald (1981), 48 N.S.R. (2d) 361, Hallett J. refers to "fairness" specifically dealing with the factors considered in a division of matrimonial assets under s. 13. Clearly in both cases Hallett J. was dealing with "fair" or "unfair" as a word used in s. 13.
