What is the relevance of gang membership in a criminal case?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Orozco, B276130 (Cal. App. 2018):

Although there was no gang enhancement alleged, their gang membership was relevant to the prosecution's case against them. The relevance of the gang membership in this case is what distinguishes it from the gang evidence introduced in the cases relied upon by defendants. In those cases, the gang evidence was not relevant to the underlying charges. (People v. Perez (1981) 114 Cal.App.3d 470; People v. Memory (2010) 182 Cal.App.4th 835.)
