What is the effect of a polygraph test failing to produce positive results for a murder suspect?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from The People v. Reyes, E047521, No. RIF1234419 (Cal. App. 2010):

It is not disputed that defendant was in custody after completion of the polygraph exam, when Heard told defendant he had failed the polygraph test and had lied about his nonparticipation in the murder. Because defendant was not advised of his Miranda rights at this point, his statements made thereafter, while at the sheriffs station, were inadmissible under Miranda v. Arizona, supra, 384 U.S. at pages 444-445, 475.
