The police, responding to the murder of three children, understandably wanted answers. But the law provides safeguards against " interrogation techniques " that, " as applied to the unique characteristics of a particular suspect, are so offensive to a civilized system of justice that they must be condemned. " ( Colorado v. Connelly (1986) 479 U.S. 157, 163, 107 S.Ct. 515, 93 L.Ed.2d 473 (Connelly ).) The hospital interview here crossed the line, and we should not hesitate to say so.
