What is the tort of bad faith in insurance law?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from First National Properties Ltd. v. Highlands (District of), 1999 CanLII 5447 (BC SC):

Sigurdson J. also commented on the tort of bad faith, but in the context of insurance law. In Suchy v. Zurich Insurance Co., [1999] B.C.J. No. 304 (S.C.) (Q.L.), Sigurdson J. said, at para. 192, that "[t]he trend in our law does not suggest the development of such a tort and it is not necessary for me to decide that."
