What is the standard of care required by a specialist to treat a patient with a life threatening condition?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Carlsen v. Southerland, 2008 BCSC 1772 (CanLII):

The standard of care required of a specialist is higher than that of a general practitioner. The more complex the procedure, the greater the expertise of the physician required; the higher risk to the patient, particularly if it is life threatening, means a higher standard of care to which the physician will be held: Brics v. Stroz, [2002] O.J. No. 1089 at para. 74 (S.C.J.).
