What are the salient features of the respondent's argument in support of his position?

Canada (Federal), Canada

The following excerpt is from Canada (Minister of Citizenship and Immigration) v. Oberlander, 1997 CanLII 5898 (FC):

In support of his position, the respondent has advanced a very extensive argument which I will endeavour to summarize over the following paragraphs. This task is rendered more difficult by the fact that the respondent, in addition to advancing his own argument, has wholly adopted the equally extensive, but not altogether complementary argument put forth by the respondent in MEI v. Dueck (T-938-95). Bearing this in mind, the following represents what in my view are the salient features of the respondent"s position.
