What is the impact of a non-compensationary principle on a former partner?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from L.A.I. v. K.B.Z., 2014 BCSC 652 (CanLII):

Non-compensatory principles address the needs of a spouse after the breakdown of a relationship. This kind of support arises out of the relationship itself and is based on the social obligation of a spouse to look after a former partner who is in difficulty, rather than letting that burden fall upon the public: Bracklow v. Bracklow, 1999 CanLII 715 (SCC), [1999] 1 S.C.R. 420, at para. 23.
