In what circumstances will the court award lump sum maintenance to a plaintiff?

Saskatchewan, Canada

The following excerpt is from Greggain v. Hunter, 1984 CanLII 2287 (SK QB):

In Osborne v. Osborne (1973), 1973 CanLII 1927 (SK QB), 14 R.F.L. 61, at pages 70 and 71, Disbery, J., stated what I regard to be a sensible guideline concerning awards of lump sum maintenance: In my opinion, when the court finds that a petitioner is entitled to a maintenance order the court should first order periodic payments, and then, when it is necessary to provide proper maintenance, order a lump sum payment in addition to the periodic payments. There will be, of course, special cases, where, in their circumstance, a lump sum in lieu of periodic payments would be justified.
