Is there any case law where a plaintiff is able to prove a subjective or internal cause of pain?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Calvez v. Todd, 1997 CanLII 2697 (BC SC):

Turning to Yoshikawa v. Yu, supra, it follows from what I have said that the existence or continuation of pain of both plaintiffs must be said to have a subjective or internal cause. The plaintiffs have failed to convince me that they have not consciously perpetuated their symptoms. I am unable to say whether the plaintiffs really desire to be free of their psychological problems. They have therefore failed to establish causation.
