What rights does a defendant have at trial?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Coffey, 430 P.2d 15, 60 Cal.Rptr. 457, 67 Cal.2d 204 (Cal. 1967):

17 Among the indicated rights is that of the right to counsel at trial. (Gideon v. Wainwright, supra, 372 U.S. 335, 83 S.Ct. 792.) It must be emphasized, however, that we are not here concerned with the bare right to counsel; rather we are concerned with a derivative right to remain free from impeachment of testimonial credibility by means of prior convictions obtained in violation of the right to counsel.
