person invokes the right to counsel, the police must cease interrogation until counsel is provided or the suspect initiates further contact and makes it clear that he or she wishes to proceed without counsel. [Citations.]" (People v. Peevy (1998) 17 Cal.4th 1184, 1187-1188.) The Miranda warnings are designed to protect Fifth Amendment rights from "the coercive pressures that can be brought to bear upon a suspect in the context of custodial interrogation." (Berkemer v. McCarty (1984) 468 U.S. 420, 428.)
