This inquiry is subject to the rule that where the record does not reveal a reason for defense counsel's act or omission, the conviction must be affirmed unless there is no satisfactory explanation or, when asked for an explanation, counsel failed to give one. (People v. Tello (1997) 15 Cal.4th 264, 266-267; People v. Lewis (1990) 50 Cal.3d 262, 288.)
