A claim for unjust enrichment may lie with respect to property acquired prior to commencement of the relationship, it being sufficient to show a contribution relating to the preservation, maintenance or improvement of the property: Sorochan v. Sorochan, 1986 CanLII 23 (SCC), [1986] 2 S.C.R. 38. Generally speaking, a claimant will not expect to share in appreciation (or depreciation) in value prior to commencement or subsequent to termination of the relationship.
