What is the test for providing services of value to a Defendant during a short relationship?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Geensen v. Larocque, 2000 BCSC 817 (CanLII):

The defendant specifically relied on the case Toth v. de Frias. This case involved a one year relationship. The plaintiff and her daughter resided with the defendant. The plaintiff performed most of the household work and paid for some food and a portion of the utilities. The parties in fact became engaged during their relationship. The court found that although services of value had been provided to the defendant when all of the circumstances were considered on balance the plaintiff had not been treated unfairly. This was a short relationship and given the overall benefits that each of the parties bestowed on the other that in the overall balance there was no depravation established.
