What is the wife's position on spousal support?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Drake v. Drake, 1995 CanLII 7355 (ON SC):

The major focus of the wife’s position is that there should be a fair distribution of the economic gains and losses of the marriage. The wife relies on Moge v. Moge, supra, at p. 373: … the purpose of spousal support is to relieve economic hardship that results from “marriage or its breakdown.” Whatever the respective advantages to the parties of a marriage in other areas, the focus of the enquiry … must be the effect of the marriage in either impairing or improving each party’s economic prospects.
