In what circumstances will a sheriff be held liable in a civil action for failing to properly supervise the actions of a sheriff?

Saskatchewan, Canada

The following excerpt is from Reum v. Rutherford, 1917 CanLII 186 (SK QB):

In Smith v. Pritchard, 19 L.J.C. P. 53; 8 C.B. 565; 137 E.R. 629, at p. 638, Maule, J. said: The reason that the sheriff is held liable is, that, having a duty imposed upon him by law, instead of performing it himself, he delegates it to another; and therefore it is but just that he should be responsible for the misconduct of those to whom he so delegates the performance of his duty.
