In approaching damages, it is often important to determine how long an injury condition will continue to affect the plaintiff. The quantum of non-pecuniary damages is influenced by the duration of an injury, one of the factors set out in the often-cited decision in Stapley v. Hejslet, 2006 BCCA 34, at para. 46. Similarly, claims for lost future earning capacity are heavily influenced by how long into the future an injury may impair earning capacity. The same holds true for costs of future care and loss of housekeeping capacity.
