Loss of housekeeping capacity is a compensable loss to be ordered with restraint (McTavish v. MaGillivray, 2000 BCCA 164). The loss of the capacity can be assessed by considering the opportunity cost to a voluntary provider or the replacement cost of such services (McTavish at paras. 28, 31 and 32). Courts in British Columbia have favoured the latter (McTavish at para. 34). It is not necessary the plaintiff establish that someone will be employed to do housework in the future to be entitled to payment under this heading (McTavish at paras. 23 and 52).
