What is the effect of a long-term spousal order on income inequality between the spouses?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from Provost v. Provost, 1999 ABQB 969 (CanLII):

My analysis of the cases in Whaley v. Whaley (supra) led me to the conclusion that even in a long-term marriage, the result of the spousal order should not be that both parties have the same after-tax income. I also found that the position of the parties after the order should not be so disparate that one was living in very comfortable circumstances while the other lived at or near the poverty line.
