The question of the division of assets between unmarried partners has been addressed extensively in the case law. The leading case is Kerr v. Baranow, 2011 SCC 171, which developed the concept of a “joint family venture” in deciding whether one party retained a disproportionate share of the assets accumulated during the course of a relationship.
