How has the term "manufacture" been defined?

Canada (Federal), Canada

The following excerpt is from Giesecke & Devrient Security Card Systems Inc. v. Canada, 1998 CanLII 8121 (FC):

The term "manufacture" was defined in The Queen v. York Marble, Tile & Terrazzo Ltd., 1967 CanLII 469 (SCC), [1968] S.C.R. 140, in the following terms, at page 145: For the present purposes, I wish to note and to adopt one of the definitions cited by the learned judge, i.e. that manufacture is the production of articles for use from raw or prepared material by giving to these materials new forms, qualities and properties or combinations whether by hand or machinery.[1]

The jurisprudence applying the definition of "manufacture" in The Queen v. York Marble, Tile & Terrazzo Ltd., supra, is extensive. For the purposes of the present case, it is necessary to refer to some of the overriding principles established in that jurisprudence.
