What is the purpose of the contempt power?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from City of Kamloops v. 678254 B.C. Ltd., 2011 BCSC 1231 (CanLII):

There is no question that the central purpose of the contempt power is to uphold compliance with orders of the court. This preserves the rule of law and prevents what we dread most in a civilized society - citizens concluding that only might makes right and resorting to self-help remedies: Larkin v. Glase, 2009 BCCA 321 at para. 7.
