What is the test for determining the motive of a defendant’s actions in a criminal case?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. Beauchamp, 2009 CanLII 37720 (ON SC):

In United States of America v. Dynar, 1997 CanLII 359 (SCC), [1997] 2 S.C.R. 462 Cory J. and Iacobucci J. stated: “It does not matter to society, in its efforts to secure social peace and order, what an accused’s motive was, but only what the accused intended to do. It is no consolation to one whose car has been stolen that the thief stole the car intending to sell it to purchase food for a food bank.”
