What is the test for the purpose of spousal support?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Morneau v. Morneau, 2014 BCSC 2269 (CanLII):

The basis for compensatory entitlement to spousal support was summarized in Lochhead v. Lochhead, 2014 BCSC 962. It is well established that compensatory support is intended to provide redress to the recipient spouse for his or her efforts which conferred an economic benefit or advantage on the other spouse, and for that spouse’s economic disadvantage arising from the marriage or its breakdown. In particular, the assumption of primary childcare and household responsibilities often results in lower earning potential and fewer prospects for financial success in the future (at para. 33).
