What is a shareholder’s reasonable expectation that they would be entitled to protection?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from 1043325 Ontario Ltd. v. Jeck, 2014 BCSC 1197 (CanLII):

A shareholder’s reasonable expectations that are entitled to protection may go beyond his or her strict legal rights, but as noted by Southin J.A. in Safarik and more recently by Mr. Justice N. Smith in Runnalls v. Regent Holdings Ltd., 2010 BCSC 1106 at para. 42, the analysis must still begin with the consideration of the legal rights of the parties as defined in the articles.
