What factors must a former spouse consider when making a claim for spousal support?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from L.D.P. v. A.B.P., 2002 BCSC 1308 (CanLII):

While a spousal support order should, in so far as practicable, promote the economic self-sufficiency of each former spouse within a reasonable period of time, these obligations are but one of the several factors to consider: Moge v. Moge, 1992 CanLII 25 (SCC), [1992] 3 S.C.R. 813; and Bracklow v. Bracklow, 1999 CanLII 715 (SCC), [1999] 1 S.C.R. 420. Furthermore, any prospects of the plaintiff achieving the goal of self-sufficiency have been held in abeyance by the defendant’s continued refusal to pay spousal support since separation.
