What is the effect of joint tenancy when a joint tenant dies?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from McKersie v Macala, 2021 BCSC 2455 (CanLII):

It appears from the cases provided by the parties that these types of transfers are typically done to create a joint tenancy. The principal characteristic of joint tenancy is the right of survivorship, i.e., when one joint tenant dies, his or her interest in the property is extinguished and passes to the surviving joint tenant(s): Zeligs v. Janes, 2016 BCCA 280 at para. 41).
