What is the test for religious freedom in the United States?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskon Canada) v. Edmonton (City), 1978 CanLII 760 (AB QB):

Frankfurter J. in Bd. of Education v. Barnette (1943), 319 U.S. 624 at 653, 87 L. ed. 1628, said this with regard to freedom of religion: “The constitutional protection of religious freedom terminated disabilities, it did not create new privileges. It gave religious equality, not civil immunity. Its essence is freedom from conformity to religious dogma, not freedom from conformity to law because of religious dogma.”
