Does a verdict form need to restate the legal principles provided in proper instructions?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Lua, 10 Cal.App.5th 1004, 217 Cal.Rptr.3d 23 (Cal. App. 2017):

"In general, a verdict form need not restate the legal principles provided in proper instructions." (People v. Ochoa (1998) 19 Cal.4th 353, 426, 79 Cal.Rptr.2d 408, 966 P.2d 442.) Nevertheless, "a verdict form may not state principles 'contrary to the instructions given,' [citation] for doing so might cause the jury to disregard or discount those principles." (Id. at p. 427, 79 Cal.Rptr.2d 408, 966 P.2d 442.)
