the confrontation clause of the Sixth Amendment of the federal Constitution, a defendant has the "right to be present in the courtroom at every stage of his trial." (Illinois v. Allen (1970) 397 U.S. 337, 338.) A defendant's state constitutional right to be present is generally coextensive with his or her federal constitutional right. (People v.
