Can a police agent entrap a defendant into committing a crime?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Wells, 256 Cal.App.2d 463, 64 Cal.Rptr. 59 (Cal. App. 1967):

The contention with reference to entrapment is without merit. Where a police agent merely makes an opportunity available for a defendant to commit a crime there is no [256 Cal.App.2d 469] entrapment. (People v. Cordero (1966) 240 Cal.App.2d 826, 49 Cal.Rptr. 924.) The record here shows nothing beyond this.
