Can a defendant be convicted of murder based on evidence that he suffered a financial setback at a later point in his life?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Nauta, D074563 (Cal. App. 2020):

one point in his life (in August 2000), and therefore committed murder, based on evidence that he suffered a financial setback at a later point in his life (in 2001). Because the evidence was not probative of motive, it was inadmissible for this purpose. (See People v. Bigelow (1984) 37 Cal.3d 731, 746-748 [evidence of prior uncharged crimes inadmissible, in part, because it had "virtually no tendency" to prove motive for murder].)
