What is the real and substantial connection test?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from Sports Corporation v. Svoboda, 2004 ABQB 450 (CanLII):

Beals v. Saldanha confirms that the real and substantial connection test requires “reasonable grounds for assuming jurisdiction” and will be satisfied as long as there is a substantial connection with “either the subject matter of the action or the defendant.” The key to determining questions of jurisdiction is to assess the order and fairness of taking jurisdiction.
