Can a hospital porter be dismissed for failing to turn up for a shift?

Saskatchewan, Canada

The following excerpt is from Cheshire Homes of Regina Society v Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3207, 2016 CanLII 152570 (SK LA):

301. In his 2013 decision in SAHO v. CUPE, Local 4777, supra, Arbitrator Hood upheld dismissal of a hospital porter who failed to show up or call in for a scheduled shift. The grievor had been disciplined on two prior occasions within the previous six months for leaving the hospital before completing his shift. The board of arbitration found, at paragraph 9, that “given the progressive discipline for similar misconduct in a very proximate period … termination is not excessive.”
