When determining whether the evidence was sufficient to sustain a conviction on appeal, what is the role of the Court of Appeal?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Richard Sanaugustin Reyes II, C062338, Super. Ct. No. SF102126A, Super. Ct. No. SF107892A (Cal. App. 2011):

When determining whether the evidence was sufficient to sustain a conviction, "our role on appeal is a limited one." (People v. Ochoa (1993) 6 Cal.4th 1199, 1206.) "[T]he test of whether evidence is sufficient to support a conviction is 'whether, after viewing the evidence in the light most favorable to the prosecution, any rational trier of fact could have found the essential elements of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt.'"
