The following excerpt is from Briggs v. Eden Council for Hope and Opportunity, 19 Cal.4th 1106, 81 Cal.Rptr.2d 471, 969 P.2d 564 (Cal. 1999):

"The remedy authorized by the anti-SLAPP statute is a special motion to strike any cause of action which arises from an 'act of [the defendant] in [19 Cal.4th 1132] furtherance of the [defendant's] right of petition or free speech under the United States or California Constitution in connection with a public issue....' ( 425.16, subd. (b); see generally, Wilcox v. Superior Court (1994) 27 Cal.App.4th 809, 33 Cal.Rptr.2d 446.)
