What is the test for reversal of a conviction when the evidence is insufficient to support the conviction?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from The People v. Nelson, B220752, No. SA069061 (Cal. App. 2010):

The same standard applies when the conviction rests primarily on circumstantial evidence. (People v. Perez (1992) 2 Cal. 4th 1117, 1124.) Reversal is only warranted where it clearly appears "'that upon no hypothesis whatever is there sufficient substantial evidence to support [the conviction].'" (People v. Bolin (1998) 18 Cal.4th 297, 331.)
