What is the test for evidence of a defendant's criminal past?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Mateo, B266900 (Cal. App. 2016):

2. "'Evidence of prior criminal acts is ordinarily inadmissible to show a defendant's disposition to commit such acts. (Evid. Code, 1101.)'" (People v. Brown (2011) 192 Cal.App.4th 1222, 1232.) However, "in a criminal action in which the defendant is accused of an offense involving domestic violence, evidence of the defendant's commission of other domestic violence is not made inadmissible by Section 1101 if the evidence is not inadmissible pursuant to Section 352." (Evid. Code, 1109, subd. (a)(1).)
