What is the test for allowing defendants to establish the affirmative defense by raising a reasonable doubt as to its existence?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. W. Valley Caregivers, Inc., 196 Cal.Rptr.3d 82, 242 Cal.App.4th Supp. 24 (Cal. Super. 2015):

The trial court erred in allowing defendants to establish the affirmative defense by raising a reasonable doubt as to its existence. Accordingly, the People are entitled to a reversal of the order dismissing the case. (See People v. Chacon, supra, 40 Cal.4th at p. 564, 53 Cal.Rptr.3d 876, 150 P.3d 755.)
