What is the test for admissibility of expert testimony in a medical malpractice case?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Jama, D059604, D062197 (Cal. App. 2013):

Once the trial court determines a witness has sufficient knowledge of the subject matter to entitle the opinion to go to the jury, the question of the degree of the expert's knowledge goes to the weight of the evidence, not its admissibility. (People v. Bolin (1998) 18 Cal.4th 297, 321-322.) A trial court's determination of whether a witness qualifies as an expert will not be disturbed on appeal absent a manifest abuse of discretion.
