The following excerpt is from People v. Dollar Rent-A-Car Systems, Inc., 211 Cal.App.3d 119, 259 Cal.Rptr. 191 (Cal. App. 1989):

"The court shall issue a statement of decision explaining the factual and legal basis for its decision as to each of the principal controverted issues at trial upon the request of any party appearing at the trial." (Code Civ.Proc., 632.) The trial court is required only to state ultimate rather than evidentiary facts. (People v. Casa Blanca Convalescent Homes, Inc. (1984) 159 Cal.App.3d 509, 524, 206 Cal.Rptr. 164.)
