What is the test for a motion for self-representation in a personal injury case?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Johnson, 255 Cal.Rptr.3d 393, 453 P.3d 38, 8 Cal.5th 475 (Cal. 2019):

Defendant contends the trial court committed reversible error when it denied his request for self-representation under Faretta v. California (1975) 422 U.S. 806, 95 S.Ct. 2525, 45 L.Ed.2d 562 ( Faretta ), made two weeks prior to the scheduled trial date. We conclude the trial court properly denied defendants motion as untimely.
