What is the test for a jury to make a reasonable inference based on the circumstantial evidence?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Koplen, F073136 (Cal. App. 2019):

Although a jury is entitled to make reasonable inferences based on the circumstantial evidence, an inference must not be based on speculation as to probabilities. (People v. Davis (2013) 57 Cal.4th 353, 360.) A reasonable inference may not be based on suspicion, imagination, surmise, conjecture, guesswork or supposition. (Ibid.)
