What is the test for a defendant's credibility to be impeached if they have been convicted of a similar or similar crime in the past?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Spearman, 157 Cal.Rptr. 883, 25 Cal.3d 107, 599 P.2d 74 (Cal. 1979):

I respectfully dissent. For the reasons stated in my dissenting opinion in People v. Fries, 24 Cal.3d 222 at page 234, 155 Cal.Rptr. 194, 202, 594 P.2d 19, 27. I disagree with the majority's conclusion that a defendant's credibility may no longer be impeached by admission of a prior conviction of an offense identical or similar to the offense charged.
