What is the standard of review following a denial of a motion to suppress?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Prescott, C050810 (Cal. App. 7/5/2007), C050810 (Cal. App. 2007):

The standard of review on appeal following denial of a motion to suppress such as the one before us is well settled. We defer to the trial court's findings of fact if supported by substantial evidence, but employ our independent judgment as to the constitutional reasonableness of the search. (People v. Miranda (1993) 17 Cal.App.4th 917, 922.)
