What is the standard of appeal review for determining the sufficiency of evidence?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Cordero, E050093 (Cal. App. 2011):

"The standard of appellate review for determining the sufficiency of the evidence is settled. "On appeal we review the whole record in the light most favorable to the judgment to determine whether it discloses substantial evidencethat is, evidence that is reasonable, credible, and of solid valuefrom which a reasonable trier of fact could find the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. [Citations.]"' [Citation.] ... Thus, we presume every fact in support of the judgment the trier of fact could have reasonably deduced from the evidence.' [Citation.]" (People v. Wilson (2008) 44 Cal.4th 758, 806.) The testimony of a single witness, unless it is physically impossible or inherently improbable, is sufficient to support a conviction. (People v. Young (2005) 34 Cal.4th 1149, 1181.)
