The following excerpt is from People v. Davis, B292538 (Cal. App. 2020):
"When attempting to ascertain the ordinary, usual meaning of a word [in a statute], courts appropriately refer to the dictionary definition of that word." (Wasatch Property Management v. Degrate (2005) 35 Cal.4th 1111, 1121-1122.) The most pertinent dictionary definitions of "involve" are: "5. To implicate in a charge or crime; to cause or prove (a person) to be concerned in it. 6. To include; to contain, imply." (Oxford English Dictionary Online (2d ed.1989) <http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/99206?redirectedFrom=involve#eid> [as of Mar. 30, 2020].) The upshot of these definitions is that the conduct "involved" must have significantly figured in the commission of the charged offense.6 And the charged offense, as
